A Dress for Court by Gaille Hunter
an original poem
I need a dress for court
One that wins the judges favor
It can’t be bold or lusty
But it’s got to have a lot of flavor
It should make my opponent wish
he weren’t such a snake
and make his attorney take it easy
for the “little lady’s sake”
It should truly reaffirm
“You can’t keep a good woman down”.
It should make my ex consider
Picking up and leaving town
So he won’t have wonder
when he might run into me
wearing the dress
that he sees in his dreams
I want a dress that says,
“So long sucker. Good ridd’ns to your ass”
One that shows how
I’ve forgotten all about the past
I’ll wear a dress that reflects the woman I’ve become
One that represents the good stock that I come from
I want a dress that shows that I’ve been having lots of fun
Probably with a man that can get the job done
One that shows I’m blessed and truly walking in the light
Maybe purple, pink or red, maybe gold, maybe white
It can’t be too flamboyant, brash or matronly
It must be chic but modest maybe just above the knee
I need one that says that I deserve my due
One that makes him think about the jerk he’s turned into
It must command attention as
I’m passing through the hall
When the suits offer legal service
with a cell number to call
One that keeps me calm and patient until my case is heard
One that makes the judge hear honesty in my every word
A dress so perfect it just screams,
“She doesn’t need an attorney”
Just give her what she wants,
the house, the car and all the money
